Top 5 travel tips in Zadar

1. Admire the city walls

Back in time, Zadar was once the largest city-fortress in the Republic of Venice. The ramparts protected the city from attacks, wars and thank you to that, it was never captured by Turkish troops. The city keeps six links around the city giving access in and out at certain points. Some portions of the walls have been kept and six gates remain. The most spectacular ones are Land Gate and the main entrance to the city, in the Foša port. In the late 30s, the Italians made a new opening on the walls, the Bridge Gate on the north side. By the city market you find St. Rocco’s Gate and then, the Sea gate close to the ferry port. The medieval St demetrius Gate was reopened in the late 1800s and further west, the Chain Gate is the smallest one of them all also opened around the same dates. Both these gates are on the site of two earlier medieval ones.

2. Enjoy lovely and healthy breakfasts

Whether your accommodations has breakfast included or not, getting a coffee and a Sunny side up or a revitalising green smoothie together with a homemade toast and jam is a real pleasure. Around the little allies of the city you will discover little and modern cafes with excellent choices to fuel up your day. Healthy granolas, traditional porridge, and varied pastry and homemade healthy sandwiches and vegetarian or gluten free options. Every morning can be an explosion of flavours. A good one to start with is Coffee and Cake or Art Kavana. The succulent flavours will mesmerize your senses.

3. Watch the sunset in a magical setting

When you stroll around the end of the promenade, the big circle at the very end attracts your attention. But nothing really exciting perhaps. Just wait until the sun goes down and come here again. The place turns into a magical atmosphere where nature sounds and intervals of light sequences will fill up the moment. The Greeting to the Sun is a modern monument of multi-layered glass plates and photovoltaic solar modules that will offer a unique show of lights together with the sounds of the Sea Organ right next to it. Sit down at the marble steps and listen to the beautiful sounds and admire the red shades in the sky of Zadar.

4. Explore the historic centre

Roman, Venetian and Austrian influences are behind the walls of Zadar city. When you enter the centre through any of the stunning gates, you will end up in Narodni trg, a stately square with the Renaissance City Guardhouse. Close by, there is the biggest cathedral in Dalmatia, St. Anastasia’s Cathedral. A few steps away, you can visit the Museum of Church Art housed in a beautiful Benedictine Convent. In front of it, there is the Roman Forum, dominated by its famous round Church of St. Donat. And do not forget to visit the Square of the 5 wells, on top of a moat, close to the park and the Land Gate.

5. Every Friday is a feast!

An old tradition in Zadar is celebrated from June to September every Friday. The streets of the old part of the city fill in with “klapa” to celebrate the Friday Festice. Klapa are groups of villagers, expressing the cultural heritage via music, dances and traditional costumes. The songs are just one part of the show. Fresh local snacking and traditional drinks are also available at the many stalls where you can buy and indulge yourself to the delicious Dalmatian treats. Enjoy and have fun in this festive and free event!
